The main objective of this research was to describe the impact of the transition from work to retirement on a group of pre-retirees from the public sector in Bogotá. Specific objectives were set to identify the main psychosocial changes experienced during the transition, analyze the coping and adaptation strategies employed by the pre-retirees, and determine the institutional factors that impact a satisfactory retirement. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach, through interviews with six public officials in the pre-retirement process in Bogotá. Thematic analysis allowed for the identification of key trends and subcategories related to identity, routine, social relationships, and emotional adjustment. The results revealed three main trends: (1) persistence of professional identity accompanied by the development of a new personal identity, through the strengthening of interpersonal relationships, especially within the family; (2) transformations in daily routines, making new uses of free time and adapting to a new lifestyle; and (3) institutional factors that facilitated the transition, although barriers persist related to the lack of support and recognition from public entities. The transition to retirement is a complex and subjective process. The results allow us to conclude that pre-retirees in the public sector face retirement with a mixture of identity continuity, a need for adaptation, and a desire for recognition. Institutional support, emotional preparation, and the possibility of maintaining active social networks emerge as key factors for a satisfactory retirement. The research reaffirms the importance of designing public policies and psychosocial programs that consider the reality and expectations of this specific population, by promoting active, healthy, and purposeful aging.spa
